The See of Peter was another name for the papacy, the popes sitting, as it were, in the seat of St. Peter, upon whom Jesus confered primacy in the Church according to the Roman Catholic interpretation of Matthew, 16:18-19. Other Christian sects do not agree with this interpretation, a dispute over which much ink and blood has been spilt over the centuries.
