Notes: Don Alfonso, the eleventh of the name, descends from Sancho the Great, who became King of Navarra in the millenial year. By his death, through foul murder in 1035, the great Sancho had added to his lands Leon and Castilla, which he greatly enlarged at the expense of the Infidel. His lands were divided among his heirs. The line of Castilla, through his son Ferdinand I, worked steadily to reunite the realms. Union with Leon was achieved through marriage in the late 12th century, and by the late 13th the united kingdom had nearly doubled its area at the expense of the Moors, who are now confined to the environs of Granada. King Alfonso is connected by blood to most of the great houses of Christendom. He has two sons, the eldest illegitimate.
