CTAs seemed like a good idea at the time, but over the years we discovered that it caused playability and historicity problems. Even though attrition penalizes very large armies, players could still get away with CTAing armies larger than ever existed in the period, move them to a very populous adjacent fief (which made attrition less of a risk) and engage in ahistorical sieges. Moreover, it became a favorite game tactic to seek out the fiefs where CTAs would take place, and interfere with the CTA. We have found that recruiting, while slower, is much more historical and immune to gamesmanship and ahistorical tactics.
